If you have looked at silk pillowcases, you have seen a number followed by the word "momme". It sounds technical, but the idea is simple.
What momme is
Momme (often written mm) is a unit of weight used for silk fabric. It shows how much a given piece of silk weighs, which tells you how dense the fabric is. A higher number means a denser, heavier silk. A lower number means a lighter, thinner one.
How to read the number
- Lighter silk has a lower momme and feels very light.
- Medium-weight silk, around 19 to 22 momme, is common for bedding such as pillowcases.
- Higher numbers mean more fabric and usually a higher price.
Momme is not a quality grade by itself. Fiber quality and how the fabric is made also matter, so look at the full description and not only the number.
Our silk pillowcase
Our Pure Mulberry Silk Pillowcase is 100% mulberry silk, 6A grade, 22 momme, in standard size 20 x 26 inches with a hidden zipper. It is real silk, so wash it gently: delicate cycle or hand wash in cold water, then air dry.
Silk or satin?
Satin is a different thing. It describes how fabric is woven, and most satin bedding is made of polyester. We label ours clearly: the Satin Sleep Set is polyester, not silk. Read our guide to silk vs. satin pillowcases for the full comparison.
