Walk down any bedding aisle and you will see "silk" and "satin" used as if they mean the same thing. They do not. Knowing the difference helps you pick the one that fits your budget and your routine.
Silk is a fiber. Satin is a weave.
Silk is a natural fiber made by silkworms. Mulberry silk is the type most often used for bedding. Satin is a way of weaving fabric so that one side is smooth and glossy. Satin can be made from silk, but most satin bedding is made from polyester.
How they compare
- Feel: Silk feels cool and very smooth. Polyester satin is smooth and soft, and often a little warmer.
- Care: Silk asks for gentle care: delicate cycle or hand wash in cold water, air dry. Satin is usually easier and more forgiving.
- Price: Silk costs more because it is a natural fiber. Satin is the budget-friendly way to get the same smooth surface.
